Networking within the Alpaca community is great. This email was a response to the request 'what do you do with all that poop...'

 Mike:

One day I posted a sign outside my driveway for FREE alpaca manure and by golly - two neighbors come by quarterly and haul it off for me. They use it for organic gardening. That's the twist I would recommend to market it.

It's known to be low in nitrogen and does not burn plants, etc., when too much is applied. There has been a few articles on alpaca dung from a gardening aspect. I do not know of anyone making a financial return from it. I figure my neighbors are saving me hundreds of dollars a year in "hauling" it off. I send these folks a ham or turkey each year for the holidays.

Happy scooping. It's what separates the men from the boys! HA! (remember to take your shoes off before you come in the house, I know Carolyn would agree)

Sometimes the right tool for the job just does not jump into your hands. Here are a couple of suggestions for what I consider the best combination of tools...

  • Green two wheel bin(s) for the dirty straw.
  • A whippy grass rake for the straw.
  • A stiffer one for the poop.
  • Blue Scooper - MFR TBA
  • 'Scott' 4 wheel barrow for the poop.
  • Large rubber gloves for picking up the dirty straw...especially if you are a nail biter...
  • Large tarpaulins and a few bricks to cover the poop pile in the winter.
  • NOT a commercial but I found all mine at Home Depot...
